What is Periodontics?

Periodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the health of your gums. If you have gum disease, you may need to see a periodontist. Gum disease is an infection of the gums that can damage the bone around your teeth. It’s important to catch gum disease early so it can be treated before it causes serious damage.

How to Know If You Need Periodontics?

There are several signs that you may need to see a periodontist. If you have bleeding gums, red or swollen gums, receding gums, or bad breath, you should see a dentist right away. These could be signs of gum disease.

Cleanings We Offer

Cleanings are needed when our teeth get build-up called dental plaque. If dental plaque is not removed, it adheres to your teeth and becomes hard like a rock causing inflammation of the gums known as gingivitis. Plaque that becomes rock-like in structure is known as dental tartar. If dental tartar is not removed it will cause inflammation and bleeding of the gums, bone loss in your mouth and ultimately you can loose your teeth. We offer 3 different types of cleanings:

Regular Cleaning

A regular cleaning is also known as a prophylaxis. This cleaning is recommended for patients who have good oral hygiene and visit the dentist on a regular basis. A regular cleaning involves removal of dental plaque and tartar from all surfaces of the teeth both above and below the gum line.

Deep Cleaning

A deep cleaning is recommended for patients who have not been to the dentist in a while or who have not taken good care of their teeth. A deep cleaning involves removal of dental plaque and tartar from all surfaces of the teeth both above and below the gum line.

Scaling and Root Planning

A deep cleaning also involves scaling and root planing. Scaling is the process of removing dental tartar from the surface of the tooth. Root planning is the process of removing dental tartar from the root of the tooth. This procedure is done to help prevent gum disease.
